[Also in Divisions B3 and D1] A method of joining the ends 2 of steel reinforcements, such as wire ropes, for concrete, plastics or other materials comprises pushing a connecting sleeve 3 of steel or similar material of high strength over the ends and subjecting the sleeve over that portion at least enclosing said ends to hydraulically applied radially directed forces so that fusion of the ends with the sleeve occurs to produce a permanent connection. The sleeve may be compressed onto the reinforcement ends by means of a portable hydraulic press comprising two radiallyacting pistons 14, carrying forming tools 15, and a counter die 16 mounted on a frame 17. The reinforcement ends and/or the sleeve may be roughed as by serrations or screw threads. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the connecting sleeve is provided with annular internal serrations which increase in depth from smooth outer zones towards the central zone wherein their depth remains constant. The connecting sleeve may be of branched formation, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), to permit a plurality of reinforcement ends which converge at one point to be connected.
