Abstract

Adipic acid is made by nitric acid oxidation of the residue remaining after oxidation of cyclohexane with a gas containing molecular oxygen and removal of cyclohexane, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone from the oxidation product by distillation, optionally in the presence of steam, the nitric acid oxidation being conducted in stages performed within different temperature ranges, the first stage being performed at a temperature up to 60 DEG C. and at a lower temperature than at least one of the later stages. The nitric acid may contain a copper or vanadium oxidation catalyst and a proportion of a nitrite such as sodium nitrite to act as an oxidation initiator.
