Abstract
A transparent layer or film of a metal oxide is obtained on the surface of a glass object e.g. glass sheet, by vaporization of a metal salt at a temperature lower than the softening temperature of the glass, by a process which comprises a first step in which a layer of metal salt is condensed in anhydrous medium, e.g. nitrogen or noble gas, on the surface of the glass object and a separate second step in which this layer is brought into contact with a hydrolysing or oxidising fluid e.g. water vapour or a gas containing oxygen, in order to transform the salt into a stable oxide. Means for carrying out the process includes a tunnel furnace in which sequence of several chambers is traversed by means for conveying the glass objects to be treated, a first of the chambers being provided with means for conditioning the temperature of the objects, a second with means for condensing a layer of metal salt on the surface of the object, a third with means for bringing a hydrolysing or oxidising fluid into contact with this layer, and a fourth with means for drying the layer of metal oxide which is obtained and for cooling the objects.
