Abstract

1,107,111. Printing-apparatus. E. E. MESSMER. 11 May, 1965 [13 May, 1964], No. 19784/65. Heading B6C. An apparatus suitable for printing on labels, sheets or other articles comprises a resilient platen 21 arranged to support a web of labels 22, an ink pad 24 mounted alongside the platen in a plane substantially transverse to that of the platen, a printing head 27-29 pivoted to one end of an arm 32 secured to a drive shaft 33, and means for rotating the head on its pivot 31 as it swings between the platen and the pad so that it encounters both members in face-on relationship. The head is normally biased towards the pad by a spring, Fig. 3 (not shown) and printing is effected by activating a magnetic clutch, Fig. 1 (not shown) which is associated with an electric motor and rotates the shaft 33 against the pressure of the spring. The head is provided with a stem slidably accommodated within a sleeve 45 mounted for rotation about pivot pins 47. A switch, not shown, is actuated by the label feed and energizes a solenoid which closes a switch, Fig. 1 (not shown) causing the clutch to be activated. Just before the head reaches the printing position the latter switch is opened by an arm on the shaft 33. Printing surfaces.-The head comprises a magnetized holder 27 within which is located a rubber printing member 29 having a metallic backing 28. Inking apparatus.-The pad 24 has a metallic shell 25 and is removably accommodated within a structure 23 on a pivoted wall 12 of the apparatus frame, magnets 26 serving to hold the pad and shell in place.
