Abstract

In an opposed piston compression ignition engine with the cylinders arranged around the drive shaft 4 and driving the shaft through cam means 6 on flywheels 5 on the shaft, each piston 9, Fig. 3, has a rod 10 carrying a retaining piston 11 provided with a cam bowl 14 engaging the cam 6. A second cam roller 16 engages behind a flange on the cam 6 to hold the bowl 14 in contact with the cam. The rod 10 has grooves 11 which permit air compressed behind piston 9 to pass into the supplementary cylinder 8 to act on the piston 10 during the working stroke of piston 9, the grooves being closed near the end of the stroke.
