Abstract

1,106,951. Coating elongate m a t e r i a l. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. 23 March, 1965 [25 March, 1964], No. 12327/ 65. Heading D1L. Apparatus for continuously coating a moving elongate object such as a wire W, strand, cord, rope or strip with resin comprises (see Fig. 1 not shown) straightening rolls (3), a cleaning tank (4), a rinsing tank (6), a priming unit (8), a drying unit (10), a preheating induction coil (12), a chamber (14) including a fluidised bed of particulate resin coating, an area (18) where the particles of resin are fused to obtain a smooth surface, a water quench (20) and a take up coil (22). When additional fusing heat is required an induction coil (16) placed after the chamber (14) is used. The priming unit (8) comprises (see Fig. 2 not shown) a chamber (24) through which the wire passes to be engaged by a cord wipe (26) spiraled thereabout and into which priming fluid is delivered, the excess draining from the chamber and being returned to the reservoir. As shown the coating chamber comprises an air diffusion board 74, a manifold 106 whereby air is introduced to chamber 104 beneath the board 74 and a manifold 78 connected to a suction pump 88 whereby said air is extracted. At the wire inlet and outlet seals are provided to prevent emission of resin particles. Each seal comprises a central portion 58, 58' surrounded by a chamber 52, 52' to which air is delivered via conduits 68, 70, 72. This causes a flow of air through the cone shaped orifice 64 and inwardly through the orifice 50 or 50' through which the wire enters and leaves the chamber. The portions 58, 58' are adjustably threaded in the main body 48 of the seals so that the size of the conical orifice may be adjusted. The chamber 14 may be split along its length by walls 92 and the exit seal 42 may be selectively mounted on one of 'these walls to provide a shortened chamber, in which case means are provided to shorten the effective lengths of the upper and lower manifolds. Thermoplastic or thermosetting resins may be applied, e.g. chlorinated polyether, epoxy, nylon polyester, polyethylene and vinyl.
