In a centrifuge designed to allow for the introduction of rotors of different sizes, each rotor is provided with a disc 12 having a diameter specifically related to the size of the rotor, and after the introduction of a rotor of a particular size a sensing arm 13 fixedly mounted on 'a rotatable shaft 14 is moved into contact with the periphery of the disc 12 so that a permanent magnet 17, carried by an arm 16 fixedly mounted on the lower end of the shaft 14, is moved from a neutral position to a position in which it cooperates with one of a number of switches 18 disposed one in each of a number of circuits controlling the speed of the centrifuge driving motor 11 whereby the particular rotor introduced is driven at a predetermined speed. The sensing arm 13 may be moved manually into its operative position. Alternatively, the arm 13 may be spring-loaded and may be moved upon the release of a detent. In a further arrangement, the arm 13 may be electrically actuated so that, after the insertion of a rotor and actuation of a switch effected, for example, as a result of closure of the lid or cover of the centrifuge, the arm will be automatically moved into contact with the disc 12. In this case, trip switches are incorporated to ensure return of the arm 13 to a neutral position before the fitting of a rotor of a different size and the circuitry is such as to interlock with the main control switch of the centrifuge.
