Classes 38(3) and 38(5) A reversing switch for a motor, especially that of a garbage disposal unit, comprises two contact-carrying plates 36, 44 co-axial with the shaft 30, the plate 44 being movable axially by centrifugal means and angularly by direction responsive means. The plate 44 is carried by a sleeve 42 and is urged upwards to separate the contacts by a spring 46. Plate 36 is fixed and carries contacts 70, 72, 76, 78 connected in pairs by members 74, 80, the plate 44 having contacts 100, 102. A frame 120 secured to the shaft carries weights 126 normally urged to the Fig. 6 position by springs 130. When the shaft is stationary, a plate 40 is forced downwards by weights 126 to close the contacts, Fig. 6, which are in circuit with a starting winding. As the motor speeds up. the weights fly out and release the plate 40 which with plate 44 moves up to open the starting circuit. When a main switch (not shown) is opened, the shaft slows down and weights 126 depress the plate 40 again, at the same time rotating it and plate 44 by friction in the direction of rotation to an extent limited by a pin and slot connection 52. 54 between plates 36, 44.
