Abstract
914,379. Snap-action switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 28, 1960 [Dec. 31, 1959], No. 44440/60. Class 38 (5). A switch-operating mechanism comprises a handle connected via a lost-motion and a toggle linkage to an energy storage means including a spring wound on a pulley of eccentric circumference, wherein an operating-shaft of the switch is driven by the charged spring via a further lost-motion device when the toggle linkage is moved over-centre. In Fig. 1, to close the switch, handle 12 which is loose on a shaft 3 is rotated counterclockwise, so that a lug 15 engages a lug 13 on a hub 8a also loose on shaft 3. Lug 8a is fixed to a toggle link 8 connected to a link 7 pivoted at 6a to a crank 6 on a shaft 9 carrying the pulley 11 which is thus also moved counter-clockwise to charge the spring 2. Eventually the toggle 7, 8 moves over-centre at about the time the lower end of a slot 16 in link 8 engages a pin 17a carried by shaft 3, and the spring discharges, reversing the rotation of crank 6 and continuing the movement of links 7, 8 so that shaft 3 is rotated counter-clockwise to rotate the switch 1 via gears 4, 5. The switch is opened by rotating handle 12 in the opposite direction. In a modification, Fig. 2, the pivot 6a is carried by a lever 18 and is movable radially in a slot 21 in the crank 6 so as to vary the moment arm for force transmitted thereby. A dashpot (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) may damp the opening movement following contact separation. Modified lost-motion devices are described (Fig. 9, not shown).
