[Also in Divisions F1 and H2] In a high-voltage generator, particularly for ignition of I.C. engines or oil burners, the output of a non-contact making A.C. source 12<SP>1</SP> is coupled to a circuit comprising inductor 17, capacitor 21 and an auxiliary spark-gap 18 so as to cause in each half-cycle of the A.C. source, a train of high-frequency discharges across the auxiliary spark-gap 18, a step-up transformer 16 being coupled to the spark-gap 18 so as to provide a corresponding train of high-frequency discharges across a principal spark-gap 23; current from the A.C. source being passed via an independent circuit through the principal sparkgap 23 during and after the high-frequency discharges, e.g. to " re-heat " the main spark. Source 12<SP>1</SP> may be a transistor oscillator as shown. Inductor 17 may be the leakage inductance of a transformer. In Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the breakdown time of gap 18 is determined by movement of one electrode closer to others, such electrodes may be part of the distributer of an I.C. engine, further transformers 16 feeding respective spark plugs. In Figs. 4, 7 (not shown), the breakdown of gap 18 is initiated by mechanical contacts. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the gap 23 completes a circuit between an A.C. supply and a load, transformer 10 being replaced by a phase-shifting transformer which controls the breakdown time of gaps 18, 23.
