Abstract
1452122 Ignition circuits BRITISH GAS CORP 1 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 47207/73 Heading F1B An electric spark ignition circuit arrangement for igniting combustible gaseous fuels includes a two electrode spark gap 8, means 24, 56, for generating a high voltage and means 3, 7 for generating a low voltage the components over which the high voltage and the low voltage outputs are developed being connected in series with the spark gap 8 and the arrangement being such that in use of the circuit arrangement following breakdown of the spark gap by the high voltage generator, the low voltage generator maintains an arc across the spark gap. The high voltage generating means is arranged to generate alternating current and the low voltage generating means is arranged to generate direct current or direct current combined with alternating current of frequency much lower than the frequency of the current generated by the high voltage generating means, the means for generating the high voltage alternating current being adapted to permit the ready flow of direct current through its output impedance C, D and including a single step up transformer 6 whose secondary winding C, D provides the output impedance. The means for generating direct current or quasi direct current is adapted to permit the ready flow of alternating current through its output impedance by the use of frequency-selective components. In a modification (not shown), an additional spark gap is located in the lead connecting the spark gap 8 to the high voltage terminal C and a capacitor is connected in parallel with this additional gap. In another modification there are three ignition spark gaps and in a further modification there are four ignition spark gaps. The invention is described as applied to gas burners but is stated to be applicable to internal combustion engines. The device 4 may be an inert gas filled spark gap or a thyristor switch actuated by a neon-tube voltage sensitive circuit.
