Abstract

[Also in Division G2] A printing plate comprises a base constituted by a foil or plate of iron, zinc or aluminium, a layer or foil of copper attached to the base by adhesive or hot-rolling, and a surface layer of chromium or nickel applied to the copper by electroplating. The plate is completed by coating the surface layer with a light-sensitive composition, exposing the composition to light under a master, developing by treatment with water, etching away the surface layer in the image parts, and finally washing away the coating from the non-image parts. The lightsensitive coating may contain bichromate and gelatine, or the light-sensitive substance may be a diazo compound, e.g. an ester or amide of a quinone-diazido-sulphonic acid, a substituted or unsubstituted quinone-diazido-carboxylic acid or a compound containing one or more azido groups, e.g. an azidostyryl compound. The coating may contain an azido compound and albumen or other water soluble colloid such as gelatine, gum arabic, polyacrylic acid, polyvinylpyrrolidene or cellulose ether. A specific example given comprises a solution in aqueous methanol of 4 parts by weight of gelatine and 1 part by weight of the sodium salt of 4-azidobenzal-acetone-2-sulphonic acid.
