Abstract
A metallic film (e.g. of Au) on glass, after being treated with an aqueous solution of SnCl2, is treated with an aqueous solution of a salt of a noble metal (i.e. of Ag, Au, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Os or Ir) the concentration of such solution and the duration of such treatment being such that this treatment improves the abrasion resistance of the film when dry. The glass may form a coating on a ceramic support. The noble metal salt may be AgNo3, AuCl3 or PdCl3 and its solution may comprise 10-100 mg of salt per litre of H2O. The treated metallic film may be covered with another sheet of glass or vitrified ceramic to form a laminate. The further sheet may be bonded to the treated sheet bearing the metallic film directly or through an intermediate layer such as an intermediate plastics sheet. In Example 1, a laminated wind screen is made by coating glass with Au, treating with SnCl2 solution, washing with H2O, treating with AgNO3 solution, washing with water and drying, and then assembling with a vinyl resin sheet and a clear glass sheet using intermediate adhesive layers. Example 2 is of making electric heating panels from glass sheets by metallizing them with gold and then treating them with aqueous solutions of SnCl2 and AgNO3.
