Abstract

Self-luminous markers and signs are produced by applying phosphors to the surfaces of radioactive particles comprising heat-treated waterinsoluble dehydrated carbonaceous organic ion exchange resin having a radio-isotope dispersed therein (see Division G6). The phosphor in an organic binder may be coated over the particles themselves or over particles mounted on a substrate.ALSO:Metal coatings are applied to radio-active particles comprising a heat-treated water-insoluble dehydrated carbonaceous organic ion exchange resin having a radio-isotope dispersed therein (see Division G6). Coating may be carried out by (a) soaking the particles in aqueous stannous chloride solution, then in aqueous palladium chloride solution, and then in an electroless nickel plating bath; Ag, Cu, Co and Au may be applied similarly; (b) fluidizing the particles mixed with a metal carbonyl at an elevated temperature; or (c) applying an electrically conducting coating and then plating with metal. Reference is also made to coating by electro-deposition and vapour deposition, and to coating with Nb, Ta, W, Zr and Ti.
