A contact lens having a bevelled peripheral edge 15 is formed with a recess 13 from which extends, on the eye-contacting surface of the lens, a transverse channel 17. The lens may be weighted in one quadrant to prevent rotation over the eye. In a particular embodiment a contact lens is provided with four recesses 13 and four associated channels 17.
