Abstract

1,106,027. Water tube boilers. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. 15 June, 1966 [28 July, 1965], No. 26786/66. Heading F4A. A bottom supported water tube boiler, fired by solid, liquid, gaseous or pulverized fuel comprises a tube lined furnace chamber 14, leading to a boiler tube bank 12 extending between upper and lower drums 26, 28 respectively. From the boiler bank 12 the gas is exhausted through a tube lined rear pass 54 containing an economizer 58, to outlet 56. The furnace chamber side walls are formed by upright gas-tight welded tubes extending between lower and upper side wall headers 34, 38 respectively whilst the furnace chamber floor 20, front wall 22 and roof 24 are all formed from continuous C-shaped tubes gas tightly welded together and extending between a lower rear wall header 36 which with the lower side wall headers 34 forms a U-shaped header unit, and the upper drum 26. The rear wall 18 of the furnace chamber is defined by further tubes extending between lower rear header 36 and upper and lower drums 26, 28, the tubes forming a nose baffle 42 to protect superheater 44 from radiant heat from furnace chamber 14, whilst those tubes which extend to the upper drum 26 form a screen 46 in front of the boiler bank 12. The rear wall 50 of the rear gas pass 54 is also lined with vapour generating tubes extending between the lower rear wall header 36 and the upper drum 26. The boiler bank 12 and the drums 26, 28 are mainly supported by spaced downcomer tubes 48 extending between the lower drum 28 and the lower rear wall header 36, and partly by the rear wall 50 of gas pass 54. The enclosure of the downcomer tubes 48 by the rear gas pass 54 minimises thermal stresses due to expansion, particularly on start up of the boiler. The lower rear wall header 36 is itself fixedly supported by mountings 62 on pedestal 63, whilst the side wall headers 34 are slidably engaged by mountings 66. The rear wall 50 is supported through gussets 64, and slidable bearing plates 67 on structural members 65.
