Abstract

A coating of an organic material is formed on a substrate by generating a corona discharge in a gas comprising an organic vapour provided between two spaced electrically conductive surfaces at least one of which is electrically insulated from the gas whilst the substrate is positioned in the path of the discharge. The vapour may be of methane, benzene, toluene, butadiene or acrylonitrile, indene or metacresol diluted with argon and the resulting coating is polymeric in form. The substrate may be paper or a metal can which may form one electrode while the other electrode may be of insulated glass and may be positioned within the metal can. The coated substrate may be cured e.g. by heating.
