Abstract
1,105,382. Metal coated wire. ROEHR PRODUCTS CO. Inc. 2, March, 1965 [2, March, 1964], No. 40339/67. Divided out of 1,105,381. Heading E1K. [Also in Division B3] Work hardened solid or tubular metallic filaments having a maximum diameter of .0005 inches (solid) or .015 inches (tubular) are made by sheathing each of a plurality of elongated elements from which the filaments are to be formed with a material having physical characteristics differing from those of the elements to permit separation of the sheath material from the elements when desired; bundling the sheathed elements in parallel relationship; hot forming the bundle to reduce the cross-section thereof; drawing the elements therein to a preselected filament cross-section; and removing the sheathing material. As described stainless steel wires are sheathed with copper or monel metal, a bundle of the sheathed wires are assembled in a cylindrical housing which is then evacuated and sealed and compacted e.g. by compression or extrusion to form a billet. The billet is then hotformed by extrusion or rolling and is then cold-drawn to the required cross-section. The material of the housing and sheathing is then removed e.g. by immersion in nitric acid. Tubular filaments can be similarly made by providing tubular elements of stainless steel with cores and sheathing of copper or monel metal and repeating the above procedure.
