Abstract

A preparation useful in the diagnosis of viral hepatitis comprises a physiologically acceptable suspension of antigenic components of active or inactivated human hepatitis virus obtained by extracting virus-containing material with diethyl ether or chloroform and subsequently evaporating the solvent. Inactivated virus used may be obtained by culturing the virus on animal kidney tissue cells and inactivating the virus, e.g. by treatment with formalin. Cutaneous or intracutaneous application of the antigen gives a positive reaction to hepatitis infection (a red papula or swelling and generalized reddening) after 12 to 48 hours.
