Abstract

A process for preparing a vaccine for immunizing dogs against infectious canine hepatitis comprises propagating an inoculum of an infectious canine hepatitis virus that has been attenuated by at least fifty serial passages in tissue cultures selected from dog kidney, testicle and/or uterus, in a similar tissue culture in a nutrient liquid, incubating until there has been sufficient growth of attenuated virus to produce a useful concentration, and harvesting a liquid material containing the virus. The liquid material may be administered per se, or dried from the frozen state and diluted with a suitable liquid, e.g. distilled water, p normal saline solution, for use. The nutrient liquid may be Earle's balanced salt solution (herein defined) plus lactalbumin hydrolysate plus inactivated horse serum, or Medium No. 199 (herein defined) plus inactivated horse serum, while the tissue culture may be one of dog kidney or uterus in Medium No. 199.
