Abstract
1,104,993. Tobacco smoke filters. U.S. FILTER CORPORATION. 10 March, 1965 [11 March, 1964; 25 Aug., 1964; 2 Dec., 1964], No. 10255/65. Heading A2C. A method of forming a porous body suitable for a tobacco smoke filter comprises feeding a mixture of sorbent granules and a thermo-plastic binding agent therefor on to a flexible belt, shaping the belt to collect the mixture into a body of the required configuration, heating the shaped mixture to form it into a coherent porous body, and thereafter separating the body from the belt. The sorbent granules, which may be activated carbon, silica gel, activated alumina, perlite, sepiolite, soda, fuller's earth, magnesium silicate, asbestos powder or metal oxides, and the thermoplastic binding agent, e.g. polyethylene emulsion, polypropylene, or other polyhydrocarbons, are fed from a hopper 2 to an endless flexible porous belt 6. They are carried through a suction station 22, a steam treatment station 24 and a cooling station 26, the belt having been shaped to form a rod 30 which then passes to a filtermaking machine 32. The mixture may include a small proportion of fillers or additives or granular tobacco and preferably includes from 6¢-30% of binding agent and 85-93¢% of sorbent particles.
