Abstract
A process for extracting oil from palm fruit or olives comprises passing the fruit into a multi-stage counter-current flow with an organic solvent which is miscible with water and in which oil is soluble, the fruit pulp being disintegrated in at least the first stage with medium to high intensity mixing sufficient to cause disintegration of the pericarp (fruit pulp) without significant breaking of the kernels, the temperature being such that the oil extracted is maintained in a liquid condition. The disintegration may be by a paddle-type mixer (see Division A2). The solvent may be acetone or a 1:1:1 mixture of ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate and acetone or a 4:2:1 mixture of ethyl alcohol, ethyl acetate and isopropyl ether. The preferred temperature of operation is 50-55 DEG C.ALSO:The soft pericarp of olives or palm fruit is removed from the kernels and broken up by intensive mixing in the presence of a solvent for the oil contained therein. In an example, the mixer comprises a 7 inch diameter by 10 inches high vessel with four 0.75 inch wide vertical baffles spaced round the wall, fitted centrally with an impeller having six vertical blades and an outside diameter of 4.5 inches, so that there is 0.5 inch clearance between the blades and the baffles. The impeller may be rotated at 800 r.p.m.
