Description

"A CONTINUOUS CYCLE SEPARATOR-DECANTER DEVICE FOR THE INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION OF OLIVE OIL"
The present invention concerns a continuous cycle separator-decanter device, of the horizontal kind, to be used in the production process of olive oil, together with a blade stone-remover for the preparation of olive paste described in Italian patent no; RM 95 A 000 298 of the same applicant, that performs the cleaning of the olives, producing the paste consisting of the sole pulp. The olive paste and the stones are introduced into the separator decanter that performes the separation of the stones, that are expelled from the olive paste that now can follow the process for the oil extraction.
At present, two kinds of processes are used for the olive oil production:
- a discontinuous processing with presses, with crushing of the olives in big millstones, obtaining an olive paste that is squeezed in hydraulic presses for the oil extraction;
- a continuous processing, consisting in the washing of the olives, crushing and kneading for the production of olive paste; water is added to said paste for maintaining the appropriate levels fluidity for the separation in the three phases in the horizontal centrifugal decanter; the two liquid phases (oil and water) are now introduced in a vertical centrifugal separator per the separation of the oil from the water.
The discontinuous press processing, which nowadays is mainly used in old oil-mills for small productions, and the continuous processing, modern and widespread, allow the realization of three products:
- olive oil;
- olive husk;
- vegetation water: 100% of the worked product in the continuous cycle systems and 40% in the discontinuous cycle systems.
Olive husk is a processing residual that can be used for the production of oil of lesser quality by means of chemical extraction (husk oil) or for energy production. Olive husks are highly fermentable and produce oil extraction with a high acidity level.
Vegetation water has a high pollution degree and the discharge thereof is often linked with serious environmental problems.
The pollution impact is mainly of organic origin; a part thereof - about 1 0% - consists of biologically stable compounds, resistant to biological demolition, mainly carbolic acids and in part aldehydes with high energetic content, present in high quantities in the lignin and in the tannin of the stones.
The main problems of the conventional systems are of environmental and economic kind and concern the discharge of the vegetation waters and the high cost of the systems in realization and business (energy and maintenance costs).
These costs, added to possible costs for t h e treatment of the vegetation waters, have a determinant influence on the production cost of oil and on its market price.
These problems are so heavy to put the whole oil production sector in a very critical position.
The programs of territorial discharge of the vegetation waters always bring along logistic and administrative complications, due to the high pulverization in the oil-mills distribution and to the great number of small domestic farms.
The high costs for the discharge of the vegetation waters together with the already high managing costs of the plants are producing the restriction of the qua- lity olive oil market, with an advantage for cheaper oils (olive oils and not) but of lesser quality, as well as the continuous giving up of many small oil-mills.
It is the aim of the present invention to solve above mentioned disadvantages by means of a processing that provides the preventive use of above mentioned stone-remover device (Italian patent no. RM 95 000 298) that produces the oilive paste from the sole olive pulp without crushing the stones.
The aim set forth is reached by means of the separator-decanter device with continuous cycle according to the present invention, that performs the separation of the stones, that are ejected, from the olive paste that is introduced into a kneading basin for the successive oil extraction process by means of a vertical centrifugal separator.
By applying the device according to the present invention, the production, managing and undertaking costs of the plant are considerably reduced and, due to the extraction of the stone, the polluting charge of the vegetation waters is considerably reduced.
The device according to the present invention is inserted downstream of said stone-remover device and allows to separate the stones from the olive paste coming from said stone-remover by means of an appropriate centrifugation process.
The device according to the present invention has a continuous cycle: the oilve paste and the stones are introduced into a feedbox and then transferred, by means of a horizontal scroll (Archimedean screw) inside a grate that rotates in an opposite sense to the scroll; the grate is dimensioned in such a way that the stones do not escape and that they are separated from the paste for the successive transfer into the kneading basin.
The stones are pushed into the outlet chamber and ejected into a feedbox.
The use of the device according to the present invention has the following advantages with respect of the conventional processing:
- reduction of the pollution charge due to t h e vegetation waters: due to the extraction of the not crushed stones, said waters have, with respect to those produced by the conventional processings, the following features:
- lesser acidity;
- reduction of BOD 5 until a relationship of 1 :8; - less quantity of organic compounds refractory to biologic demolition, with a reduction of total carbolic acids in a relationship up to 1 :8;
- a less quantity of suspended solids and a greater capacity of sedimenting of the same. S a i d features allow to pour the vegetation waters onto the soil in greater quantities than those produced by conventional plants, in the respect of the environmental standards. reduction of production and untertaking costs of the plant, as the used machines are considerably cheaper than the conventional ones for wh at concerns supplying, installation and maintenance.
With the same production, smaller nominal power of the engines is required and thus means that the energy absorption and undertaking costs are reduced. With the same productivity, the system according to the present invention implies an encumbrance of 50% less; obtaining a high quality oil, with greater quantity yields, as:
- the stone is eliminated: when crunched in the conventional processings, it gives the oil substances that worsen its taste and that are slightly harmful for the health;
- the centrifugal decanter, used as a separator machine, and a more creamy oil is obtained; - by eliminating the olive husk , that absorb a considerable part of the produced oil, the production yield is increased;
- the use of the olive stones as an energetic resource, in consideration of the fact that the olive stones have a greater calorific power than common firewood. With respect to olive husk, that is a residual product of the conventional processings, it has a lesser emission of toxic fumes.
The present invention will be described more in detail hereinbelow relating to the enclosed figure 1 , in which a section is shown of the continuous cycle separator-decanter device for the i n dust ria l production of olive oil, according to the present invention, comprising:
- two motors l a and l b;
- a flange 2 for the support of the motors;
- an elastic joint 3;
- a plurality of supports 4 for the grill;
- an axis 5 for supporting the grill;
- a rotating grill 6 arranged in horizontal position and upwards protected;
- a plurality of bearings 7;
- a horizontal, cylindric chamber 8 for the outlet of the stones, consisting of parallel iron rods, so as to allow the outlet of the solid parts; - a protection 9 for the grill;
- a first scroll 10, having a diameter D , arranged in horizontal position;
- a second scroll 1 1 having a diameter D2 < Dx , arranged in horizontal position;
- a feedbox 1 2 for the stones and for the paste, arranged in horizontal position and installed above scrolls 10 and 1 1 ;
- a pipe for transporting the stones and the paste, arranged in horizontal position;
- a reducer 14;
- a carrying frame 1 5;
- a feedbox 1 6 for the paste arranged below the other components of the device;
- a feedbox 1 7 for the stones arranged below the other components of the device.
The enclosed figure a continuous cycle separator- decanter device for the industrial production of olive oil, in which the olive paste and the stones coming from the stone-remover, enter the feedbox 1 2, pass through the pipe 1 3 for the transport of the stones and the paste and are trasferred to the rotating grill 6 by the scrolls 10 and 1 1.
The scroll is operated by an electric motor l a with a reducer, and consists of two joined elements of dif- ferent diameter: the first, 1 1 , having a diameter D1 and arranged inside tube 1 3, and the second, 10, of greater diameter inside said rotating grill 6.
On the other hand, the rotating grill 6 is operated by a motor 1 b without reducer, that rotates in a direction opposite to the one of the scroll with a rotation speed considerably higher, and consists of iron rods of appropriate thickness arranged in such a way as not to allow the outlet of the stones.
The separation of the stones from the paste takes place inside the scroll 1 0 - rotating grill 6 system. Due to centrifugation, the paste passes through the iron rods of the grill and comes out of the paste feedbox 1 6; on the other hand, the stones are led to the stone outlet chamber 8 where they are expelled through the stone feedbox 1 7, completely cleaned.
The diameter D 2 of said scroll 10 has been provided of such dimension as to exert an efficient scraping action onto the internal surface of the grill, removing olive stones and skin and keeping the grill free from obstructions.
