Abstract
1,104,435. Alternators; core constructions. K. G. GORFIELD Ltd. 11 Jan., 1967 [12 Oct., 1965], No. 43195/65. Heading H2A. In an alternator of the kind having a rotor carrying field windings and having poles shaped so as to present inner faces which face the interior of the rotor, and a stator carrying armature windings, the poles are supported on a non-magnetic material cast or moulded against the inner faces of the poles. As shown, the rotor comprises a shaft 10 with slip rings 11 connected to a field coil 12 located between a pair of spaced discs 13 of magnetic material. Each of the discs 13 has an integral spigot 14 and is surrounded by a tubular band 15 or 16 of magnetic material. Each band has a series of poles 17, the poles of one band interdigitating with the poles of the other. The poles 17 are supported on a body 18 of generally annular form which is cast or moulded on to the poles-and adheres to them. The body 18 extends between the poles 17 so that the outer surface of the rotor is of unbroken cylindrical form. The body 18 is made of aluminium or of a phenolic-base plastics material. The edges of the poles 17 may be chamfered or otherwise shaped to key into the body 18.
