Abstract

1,104,397. Laying pipes. GUNTHER & SHIRLEY CO. 6 Sept., 1965, No. 38037/65. Heading F2P. For laying pipes underwater a handling unit 30 is lowered from a floating platform 20 by cables 24 and completely submerged in a body of water, the unit comprising a frame 32 and a gantry 34 each adjustable in height and connected by a beam 36 movable vertically and horizontally and carrying a track 98 on which are mounted layers 100 to which the pipe 110 is secured by cables 112. The hangers are interconnected and move in unison along the rail to position and connect the pipe to a previously laid pipe. A diver provided with a remote control unit 141 assists in the positioning of the pipes or an operator is accommodated in a diving chamber 142. In a modification, the gantry is dispensed with and the beam is provided with a saddle which seats on a previously laid pipe.
