Abstract

922,919. Laying pipes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov. 13, 1961 [Nov. 14, 1960], No. 40565/61. Class 99(2). Apparatus for laying a pipeline 16 on the floor 35 of a body of water 13, comprises a pipe-laying barge 11, means 14 carried by the barge for supporting and guiding a portion of the pipeline, a tow cable 21 connected to the barge, and a number of buoyant pipeline supports 18 secured in fixed spaced relation to the cable for supporting the pipeline slidably for movement along a curve extending from the barge to the floor 35 when the barge is moved over the surface of the water. As shown, the pipeline is formed by welding together sections of pipe and discharged down a shoot 14, and the lower end of the cable 21 is secured either to the last buoyancy member 21a or a drag anchor 23 provided with a channel 24 through which the pipeline passes as the barge moves forward during pipe-laying operations. The supports 18 may comprise buoyancy tanks 26, Fig. 2, clamped to the cable 21 and having depending therefrom a saddle 25, and the latter may have rollers on which the pipe rests, or the buoyancy members may each consist of blocks of wood, cork or other buoyant material secured to metal rings supporting the pipeline and connected together by wires.
