Abstract

942,218. Laying submarine cables. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE SERVICE NATIONAL, and GAZ DE FRANCE SERVICE NATIONAL. March 30, 1961 [April 9, 1960], No. 11809/61. Heading H2C. [Also in Division F2] In a method of laying submarine cables, the cable is caused to assume an S shape by means of submerged floats which are sequentially released at a predetermined depth and reattached to the substantially horizontal portion of cable about to be laid. By releasing the rearmost float F 7 (Fig. 2) from point P 0 and reattaching it at point P 7 , the S-shape of the cable is given a forward movement which is continued until it becomes necessary to joint on another length. Stop floats are then added which maintain the cable stationary with its end substantially horizontal ready for jointing. Release of the submerged floats from the cable can be manually controlled from the attendant boat by exerting a sufficient pull on the. float cable. Alternatively, the release of the floats can be accomplished automatically either by filling them with a compressible material such as air or a liquefied hydrocarbon and providing a valve which allows water to enter at a certain pressure; or by fitting a mechanical release operated by a pressure-sensitive device. Specifications 863,000 and 885,276 are referred to.
