Abstract

1,104,301. Controlling clutches. PNEUMATIC SCALE CORPORATION. 5 Nov., 1965, No. 47039/65. Heading F2L. [Also in Divisions B8 and G1] In a packaging machine the drive means includes a main cam-shaft 58 on which is mounted a one-revolution clutch 68, which includes a ratchet 348 and spring-pressed pawl 350 pivotally mounted in a pawl carrier disc 352 rotating with cam-shaft 58. A pawl stop 354 can disengage the pawl 350, and is connected to compressed-air drive means; if the scales weighing packages in the machine make their weight in time, the pawl stop 354 is retracted and the machine continues to cycle. A roller (364) mounted on arm 360 co-operates with a cut-out (365) on disc 352. If the pawl stop is actuated to cause the clutch to disengage, the roller 364 is urged into the cut-out (365) to stop shaft 58 in a " zero " position. When pawl 350 initially engages ratchet 348 a sharp impact is encountered, and to absorb such impact a friction drive assembly is provided including a separate driving arm 386 keyed to shaft 58 and provided with a drive block 388 received in a slot 390. A recess in disc 352 carries an annular friction element 398 against which bears an annular metal member 396, spring-mounted and connected to driving arm 386, so that the impact is taken up frictionally.
