Abstract
1,103,639. Ophthalmic apparatus. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 29, 1966 [April 8, 1965], No.13719/66. Heading G2J. In a method of determining the contour of the cornea, to aid in fitting contact lenses, an illuminated slit (15) Fig.1 (not shown) is projected on to the cornea (21) and an image thereof recorded on film (35). In a preferred arrangement, Fig.2, a base 43 has a chin rest 49 and forehead rest 53, and screws 63, 71, are rotated to move a slide plate 61, and frame 69, respectively, to centre and focus the apparatus on eye 23. This condition is obtained when the examiner viewing through eyepiece 165 at the end of a centre tube 87 sees the cross hair 147 aligned with the image of a cross 123, illuminated by lamp 107, on the centre of the cornea. A fine line of light is now projected by a lamp (177), Fig.3 (not shown) or (221), Fig.4 (not shown) on to the cornea 21 and an image thereof produced by mirror 219, lenses 205, 207, and mirror 215 on a film at 217. The lamps 107, and either (177) or (221), and camera 193 are mounted on the centre tube 87 so that all may be rotated in bearings 73, 93, about the axis of tube 87 and thus the contour of the cornea 21 may be obtained along any cross-section passing through the centre of the cornea.
