A body, such as practice ammunition, which is intended to disintegrate in use, is formed from metallic powder grains embedded in a matrix which coats the grains and disintegrates suddenly and completely beyond a predetermined stress limit. The matrix may be composed of a fatty acid metallic salt or salts with a melting-point 20% above the maximum expected temperatures. Calcium, aluminium, barium, copper, lead and zinc stearates are among those salts mentioned as suitable as well as palminates, oleates, resinates, laurates, naphthenates or telates of these metals. The powder grains may consist of a hardened metal alloy such as an iron-silicon-chromiumnickel-copper alloy and have a size range between 0À06 and 0À2 mm. The body may be made by mixing the powder with a solution of the matrix substance or substances and pouring or compressing the mix in a mould. The solvent, which may be a hydrocarbon, is then evaporated by heating, the mix then being heated to the melting-point of the matrix to coalesce the matrix around the powder grains. The resulting body may then be coated, e.g. with clear varnish.
