An apparatus for packing objects in heat sealable webs 34 between upper and lower U-shaped sealing brackets 6, 1, has a clamp device 25, 26, 27 on the upper bracket and a dividing cutter 43 which severs the web over its complete width, the clamping device retaining the edge of the web formed by the severing. The web 34 is fed from a roll 32 round guide rolls 33 and is held in the clamping device 26, 27. The upper sealing bracket 6 is pivoted clockwise (dashed lines in Fig. 2), about its fulcrum 4 through 180 degrees and the object to be packed is placed on the web above the sealing bracket 1. The upper sealing bracket 6 is then pivoted back through 180 degrees and engages the lower sealing bracket 1. A stop 30 on a handle 19 engages the clamp part 25, 26 and a finger 40 engages an extension 31 of the clamp part 27, which is pivoted about a pin 22, and opens the clamp. The clamp 27 is held open by engaging an elastic cushion 41. The handle 19 is then lowered further causing the lever support 39 of the cushion 41 to move against the action of a spring 38. When the handle 19 is lowered further, the sealing brackets 1, 6 pivot about the fulcrum 4 and compress a spring 14, allowing the dividing cutter 43 to sever the web. The pressure on the handle 19 is then relaxed, and the brackets 1, 6 and the cushion 41 pivot upwards, together with the web 34 clamped between the clamp 27 and the non-elastic edge of the cushion support 42. When the handle 19 is released, the web 34 is freed from the clamping action of the clamps 27 and the edge 42 and the clamps 26, 27 instead grip the end of the web. The upper sealing bracket 6 is then raised, so that a cam 46 acts through levers 47 &c. to tilt a platform 35 and the lower sealing bracket 1 clockwise, and slide the wrapped packet out of the machine. In a modification, Figs. 6-9 (not shown), a spring (31<SP>1</SP>) urges the clamp (27) clockwise and the stop on the handle for co-operating with the clamps is omitted. The single clamp (36) is replaced by a two-part clamp (50), (51) pivoted about the shaft 22, and the cutter 58 has a T- shaped head. The action is such that when the web has been severed, the two part clamp passes below the lower edge of the cutter to grip the free end of the web.
