908,652. Wrapping-machines. NOVOTECHNICS Ltd. Jan. 1, 1959, No. 108/59. Class 94(1). A machine for-packaging articles by wrapping material W around the articles to form a tube comprises gripping means 7 for holding the end of a length of web W, support means 80, 80<SP>1</SP> for the web and the articles A to be enclosed therein, folding means 8 for pressing the web around the articles and against the end held in the gripping means 7, heat sealing means 180 for effecting a seal between the contacting portions of the web, and means 33 for severing the resulting package from the web. At the start of a cycle the operator actuates a handle to open the gripper 7 and then leads the free end of the web W therein whereafter he allows the gipper to close. The web W is then forced by hand down on to the supports 80, 80<SP>1</SP> to form a loop. A number of articles, such as apples, are then placed in the looped web. By treading on a foot pedal 21 a cam 15 is withdrawn from between the arms 5 <SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP> of a scissor action assembly carrying the gripper 7 and the folding means 8. A spring 84 then closes the assembly with the result that the web W is caused to encircle the articles A and, at the same time, a slider 180 from an electric device D moves forward to heat seal the abutting surfaces of the web W. At this stage the operator releases the pedal 21 and depresses another pedal 22 (not shown) which, through a cable arrangement, causes a knife 33 to be drawn across the web W to sever it from the completed pack. The pedal 22 is then released to return the knife to its starting point. The wrapped articles are then transferred to another machine in which the ends are held whilst the main body portion is rotated so as to form twisted end closures.
