Abstract
1,102,948. Connecting-pieces; end terminals; coaxial connectors. AMP Inc. 18 April, 1966 [28 April, 1965], No. 16799/66. Heading H2E. An electrical connector (Fig. 2) for penetrating the insulating sheath and crimping on to the conductor of a cable has a U-shaped metal (e.g. brass) contact portion 3 with ribs 4 such that the width of the ribs is equal to or less than the distance between adjacent ribs, the height of at least one of the ribs is equal to or greater than the distance between adjacent ribs and also equal to or greater than the thickness of the remaining parts of the connector. The ribs may be tapered, rounded or have sharp edges, and in order that some may grip without piercing the insulation, their heights may increase from one or both ends or from the middle or may alternate (Figs. 3 to 11, not shown). The ribs need not extend to the sides of the contact portion (Fig. 21a, not shown). The contact portion is bonded to a laminated plastics sheath cut from a feed-strip (Fig. 1, not shown). The connector may be used to crimp film-insulated and/or stranded wires together in-end to-end or side-by-side relation (Figs. 12 to 18, not shown). The contact portion 3 may be integrally formed with a terminal ring (8) (Figs. 19, 20, not shown). In all these embodiments, the rib remote from the wire-insertion end of the connector may be of sufficient height to sever the wire on crimping (Fig. 23, not shown). A coaxial connector (Figs. 24 to 29, not shown) comprises a rolled sheet-metal contact pin (16) having end lugs (17) disposed about a bared length of inner conductor (19), and a C-shaped insulating member (14) about the lugs (17) and within a U-shaped outer contact member (10), ribbed (11) according to the invention and slit (13) at the pin-end for resilience. The lugs (17) and outer ribbed contact (10) are caused to grip the inner and outer conductors (19), (20), respectively, in a single crimping operation.
