In a travelling band filter in which an endless band of metal or nylon filtering screen 26 is immersed in liquid, filtrate being withdrawn from the space enclosed by the screen (11#, Fig. 1 not shown), the edges of the screen are fitted with nylon bearing strips 27 and grommets 28 which respectively sealingly engage continuous sealing bars 16 and demountably engage upright extensions 25 of pins 22 of endless chains 19 which are driven by sprockets (13, Fig. 1 not shown). Bars 16 and the chains 19 are supported by flanges 15 of endless loop form, mounted on side walls 14. Walls 14 also carry continuous upright guard rails 33, which restrain chains 19 against lateral movement, and screen hold-down bars 37, which restrain the screen 26 from lifting sufficiently to disengage grommets 28 from extensions 25. Where the chains and screen change direction in their upper run (Fig. 6, not shown), additional curved chain-hold-down plates (38) are supplied and the otherwise continuous bars 37 are replaced by wider, plasticlined screen-engaging shoes (44). Similarly in the lower run (Fig. 7, not shown), chain holddown plates (38'), chain support plates (47) and laterally spaced nylon-lined shoes (51), engaging the whole width of the screen, are fitted.
