Abstract

Polymers or copolymers of conjugated diolefins having high 1,4 structure are reacted with an alpha, beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic compound in an amount sufficient to form an adduct soluble in aqueous ammonia solutions. While polybutadiene, polyisoprene and copolymers of isoprene and butadiene with styrene and mesityl oxide containing up to 30 mol. per cent styrene and/or mesityl oxide are specified a preferred starting material is polybutadiene having 75 to 85% 1,4 structure and an average molecular weight within the range 1000 to 4000. Maleic anhydride is the preferred dicarboxylic compound, and the reaction may take place in the absence of a solvent at 150 DEG to 240 DEG C. The product may be oxidized with air or oxygen at 90-150 DEG C. in the presence of a conventional oxidation catalyst or subjected to hydroxylation/formoxylation with performic acid at 45-80 DEG C. or epoxidized with a peracid e.g. peracetic acid at below 45 DEG C. These further products may then be reacted with an amino group or hydroxyl group-containing substance and finally with an alkaline substance to form a salt soluble in water or mixtures of water with organic hydroxyl-containing compound. The products are useful as a basis of water-soluble coating compositions.
