1335928 Macrocyclic lactones INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES Inc 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970(4)] 31178/72 Divided out of 1335927 Heading C2C The invention comprises macrocyclic hydroxy lactones of the formulae They may be prepared by reacting the corresponding macrocyclic ketone with a peracid oxidizing agent in the presence of a boron trifluoride etherate catalyst. The invention further comprises the preparation of ambrettolides of the formula wherein x is 5, 6, 7 or 8, y is 8, 7, 6 or 5 and x+y = 13 by dehydration of the above macrocyclic hydroxy lactones.
