Abstract

In the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetic anhydride, the quantity of per-compounds present in the reaction mixture is p reduced to below 3 per cent by interrupting the oxidation, reducing the oxygen pressure, and raising the temperature above the oxidation temperature and within the limits 25-50 DEG C. If oxygen is the oxidizing atmosphere, the atmosphere during the reducing stage may be air or nitrogen. The oxidation may be effected continuously, a portion of the reaction mixture being withdrawn, reduced and returned to the reaction. In an example, a mixture of paraldehyde, vanadic acid (as depolymerizing agent) and p-toluene sulphonic acid is oxidized with oxygen at 33 DEG C. and 10 lb. pressure; after a time, the oxygen pressure is reduced and air admitted, the temperature being passed to 40 DEG C. In another example, nitrogen is used instead of air, the temperature being 43 DEG C. Specifications 443,151 and 446,259 are referred to. When the reaction product is worked up, remaining per-compounds may be removed by manganese salts or reducing agents.
