Abstract
A road surfacing binder is made by blowing with air at elevated temperature (150 DEG to 350 DEG C.) a blend of: (a) 90 to 95 parts by weight of a vacuum residue having a cut-point of 550 DEG to 570 DEG C. and derived from a Middle East crude, and (b) 10 to 5 parts by weight of a heavy coal tar oil. The invention increases the adhesivity of the binder, relative to the residue, for a given penetration, which lies in the range 10 to 350 mm./10 at 25 DEG C. The coal tar oil is a coal tar distillate sufficiently involatile to cause no fire risk during blowing and in an example was obtained by distillation at atmospheric pressure in a plate column and had a cut-point of 370 DEG C. Its density, viscosity, flash point etc. are given. Two blends incorporating 10 parts b.w. of this oil with 90 parts b.w. Kuwait vacuum residue (Specification given) are described, the blends being blown to different terminal values of the penetration (namely 210 mm./10 at 25 DEG C. and 98 mm./10 at 25 DEG C.), the specifications of the two binders being given. A catalyst may be used in the blowing.
