Abstract

1,274,301. Improving asphalts. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 6 Nov., 1969 [20 Jan., 1969], No. 3121/69. Heading C5E. An asphaltic binder, e.g. for road surfacing, is improved by oxidizing a bituminous crude petroleum residue, e.g. by air blowing to a lower penetration but not exceeding 25, and then fluxing to the desired pentration. The original binder may be the residue from a Middle East crude, and the flux may be an aromatic flux oil, an atmospheric or vacuum petroleum residue, a de-asphalted petroleum residue, a vacuum distillate, or a mixture of two or more thereof, and may be a portion of the original binder.
