Abstract
A stable artificial fog may be made of water droplets coated with a long chain fatty alcohol, especially cetyl or palemeric alcohol; the droplets preferably have a diameter less than one micron and the fatty alcohol coating is monomolecular. Preferred methods of making the fog comprise spraying water droplets (13) through a vapour (14) formed by heating the fatty alcohol (see Fig. 1, not shown); mixing a condensing jet of steam (18) and a jet of the fatty alcohol (19) vapourized by a burner (20) (see Fig. 2, not shown); forming a thin layer of the fatty alcohol upon the surface (22) of water in an container (23) and focussing an ultrasonic generator on the interface to generate a fine mist (25) p (see Fig. 3, not shown); forming a homogeneous emulsion of the fatty alcohol and water and spraying it to form particles 100-200 microns diameter which are passed through an ultrasonic field to break them down to one micron or less; and mixing a fine spray of water droplets and a fine spray of the fatty alcohol and passing them through an ultrasonic field.
