[Also in Division D1] Heat-insulating material in the form of pulverised newsprint which has been impregnated with a solid fire-proofing agent is produced by passing newsprint through a disintegrating mill 10 having rotating hammers 14 and a screen 17, blower 18, air separator 20, and screw conveyor 25 to a chute 26 to which powdered fire-proofing agent is also supplied from a stirred container 38 via a conveyor 44 and a vibrated pan 46. The mixture passes through a second similar mill 33, blower 49, and air separator 53 to conveyor and bagging means. The fire-proofing agent is borax or boric acid optionally containing aluminium sulphate.
