Abstract
837,351. Luminescent materials. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 13, 1959 [Jan. 14, 1958], No.1329/58. Class 39(1). A method of preparing a luminescent material comprises mixing together oxides of calcium, or of calcium and magnesium and oxides of silicon, cerium and lithnium or compounds which will thermally decompose to yield these oxides and heating the resulting mixture in a non-oxidising atmosphere to a temperature above 850C and below the melting point of the product, at least part of the cerium being present in the cerous valency state. Preferably in the resulting mixture the atomic ratio of calcium to magnesium lies between 1 : 0 and 1 : 5, that of calcium and magnesium together to silicon between 1 : 2 and 6 : 1, that of cerium to silicon lies between 0À002 : 1 and 0À1 : 1 and that of lithnium to silicon between 0À002 : 1 and 1 : 1.
