Abstract

In a pressurized gas cooled reactor, the graphite moderator core is provided with straight fuel channels which are inclined to the vertical to facilitate fuel handling. The fuel tubes are arranged in groups, and the axes of the tubes in each group converge so as to pass through a small zone above the group where the lateral separation of the axes is a minimum, after which they again diverge into the refuelling machine above the core. Thus, a single aperture in the pressure vessel provides access to a group of fuel channels from the servicing machine. The storage tubes in the servicing machine are mutually inclined so as to be aligned with the fuel tubes. To provide the mutual inclination of the fuel tubes, the latter are mounted in a twisted or screwed arrangement about the group vertical axis. The minimum separation zone of the axes acours within the pressure vessel wall, which also functions as the biological shield.
