Abstract

1,029,836. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Aug. 14, 1962 [Aug. 15, 1961], No. 29416/61. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor using natural uranium fuel has a moderator/coolant comprising a mixture of light and heavy water, the volume ratio of water to fuel being less than that appropriate for a heavy water natural uranium reactor and substantially greater than that appropriate for a light water enriched uranium reactor. The volume ratio preferably lies between 5 and 15, and the proportion of light water in the moderator may initially be about 5% and may be varied throughout the life of the fuel in accordance with the variation in the reactivity of the fuel. In Fig. 1, the reactor core 1 is supported within a pressure vessel 2 on a platform 3 provided with wheels that can run on a rail 4; thus the core is rotatable and allows the use of fewer charging apertures (not shown) in the pressure vessel. The fuel elements are arranged in two tiers 6 and 7 within a cylindrical wall 12; the moderator-coolant flows through the core from inlets 13 to outlets 14 and baffles 15 prevent flow outside the wall 12, the baffles being provided with slip seals 16 so that they may function in any angular position of the core. A limited number of control rods (not shown) may be provided, or control may be effected entirely by variation of the composition of the water.
