Abstract

1,100,596. Crimping. PLESSEY - UK Ltd. 27 April, 1965 [27 April, 1964], No. 17318/64. Heading B3Q. A cam or crank operated compression tool, suitable for use in crimping metal terminals, includes an adjustable indexing ring which varies the amount of lost motion in the drive of the tool and allows operation of the tool on terminals of relatively large size with a small load or on smaller terminals with a higher load. The tool includes a motor driven cam 5 which is actuated by a trigger 4 and serves to move a barrel 6, having a cam follower 7, longitudinally in the tool. Movement of the barrel causes a tappet pad 21, including integral rods 20 and 22, to close crimping jaws 16-19. As the barrel moves to the right the pad 21 at first remains in position with the jaw 16 in contact with a terminal until a degree of lost motion is taken up and the spring 24 compressed. A tappet 10, mounted for limited axial movement in the barrel, then contacts the pad 21 and the force of a pack of spring washers 15 is exerted on the crimping jaws. To crimp a small terminal with a high load, the ring 25 is rotated by a handle 33, Fig. 2, to similarly rotate the tappet 21 until a peg 28 on the tappet is aligned with a slot 30 in the barrel 6. The crimping jaws are then in a closer spaced condition than when the peg faces the slot 31. As the lost motion is taken up the faces of dogs 35 on the tappet 10 engage similar faces of dogs 36 such that the washers 15 are comparatively heavily compressed as the crimping operation takes place. In the alternative position of the handle 33 and tappet 21, the dogs 35 and 36 interengage, resulting in a lighter compression of the washers, and thus a smaller force, during crimping. A spring loaded locking dog 38 holds the ring 25 firmly in either of its two positions.
