Abstract

1,100,583. Drying washed cars. A.V.W. EQUIPMENT Ltd. 1 April, 1965 [2 April, 1964; 3 Feb., 1965], Nos. 13576/64 and 4616/65. Heading F4G. Apparatus for drying washed cars comprises a base 1 and a casing 2 housing a fan (not shown) on which is pivotally mounted a counterweighted air duct 3 tapering to a nozzle outlet 4, and a sensing means mounted forwardly of the nozzle to sense the external surface of a vehicle during its relative movement past the nozzle along a driveway. The sensing means comprises a photo-electric cell 22 and light source 23 operating an electromagnetic brake 25 on the duct 3 which forms the first and main element of the sensing means. Failure of the first means is counteracted by a roller 5 positioned behind the cell in the direction of movement of the vehicle which operates a shutter 24 to interrupt the light beam and so actuate the electromagnetic brake when it contacts the vehicle. A trip mechanism, which may be photo-electric, starts the fans in each unit on the approach of a vehicle and to lower the duct after a vehicle has passed either by a pneumatic cylinder 27 or by de-energizing the brake 25.
