Abstract

1,100,241. Cutting tools. SAUNDERSON & COSTIN Ltd. 9 June, 1965 [9 March, 1964], No. 9855/64. Heading B3B. A lathe tool comprises a shank 12 across an end face of which lies a transverse slot 14, a bit adapted to cut screw threads and having a body 18 housed in the slot, the bit having a cutting edge 20 on an edge protruding beyond one side 22 of the shank and means for clamping the bit in the slot, the end of the bit having an operative surface (34), Fig. 7 (not shown), which is generated by a thread profile moved in a direction nearly perpendicular to a plane containing the directions of the length of the shank and of the bit and which terminates in the cutting edge. The direction of generation is inclined to a plane perpendicular to the length of the shank. The slot 14 is dovetailed in section and has an axially extending slot 15 extending therefrom, the bit being clamped by a screw 24 which draws the opposed portions of the slot together. The dovetail slot is defined by two faces 42, 44 which taper towards the adjacent end of the shank 12 and a third face 40 lying therebetween, the face 40 being slightly inclined to a line perpendicular to the length of the shank. The tool is provided, at each end of the shank, with transverse slots having inclinations of different magnitude.
