Abstract

An aqueous dispersion or a foam derived therefrom contains (a) a polymer or copolymer prepared from a vinyl or divinyl monomer and containing groups capable of reacting with isocyanate groups and (b) an isocyanate group-containing reaction product of a compound of M.W. 500 to 6000 having at least two OH groups and of a stoichiometric excess of a poly-isocyanate. Preferred polymers or copolymers (a) are those derived from (1), styrene, acrylamide, butyl acrylate and optionally butadiene; (2) ethyl acrylate and acrylamide; (3) butyl acrylate and either butadiene and methacrylamide or acrylonitrile and acrylamide; (4) butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylamide and optionally vinylidene chloride and acrylic acid; and (5) acrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and butadiene. The compounds of M.W. 500 to 6000 used to form compound (b) may be polyethers, polythioethers or polyesters. The polyisocyanates may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic. It is preferred that the amount of (a) and (b) comprises 5 to 70% of the aqueous dispersion, and that the ratio (a):(b) lies in the range of 1:4 to 4:1. Numerous examples of products (a) and (b) are given, the dispersions of which or the foams derived therefrom may be used as bonding agents for fleeces (see Division D1).ALSO:Fleeces are bonded by treating them with an aqueous dispersion or a foam derived therefrom, which contains as bonding agents (a) a polymer or copolymer prepared from a vinyl or divinyl monomer and containing groups capable of reacting with isocyanate groups and (b) an isocyanate group-containing reaction product of a compound of molecular weight 500 to 6000 carrying at least 2 hydroxyl groups and of a stoichiometric excess of a polyisocyanate. In general the proportion of bonding agent is 5 to 70% by weight of the aqueous dispersion and the fleeces are impregnated with the dispersion. The excess dispersion is then squeezed off and the fleece dried. Suitable fibres from which the fleeces may be made are cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, wool, regenerated proteins, polyacrylonitrile, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyolefines, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol and polycarbonates.
