Abstract
1333188 Cross-linking polymers with polyisocyanates BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 21562/71 Headings C3C and C3P Copolymers of at least two olefinically unsaturated monomers, of which 0À1-30 wt. per cent comprises at least one monomer containing a substituent group having a hydrogen atom reactive with isocyanates (or containing a group convertible to such a substituent group during or after polymerization), are cross-linked by reaction in aqueous dispersion with a polyisocyanate containing no urea or urethane groups or a masked derivative of such a polyisocyanate. Numerous copolymers are listed, those used in specific examples being terpolymers of butadiene (60%), styrene and methacrylic acid or 2-hydroxypropyl-methcrylate; tetrapolymers of butadiene (45 or 60%), styrene and either (acrylonitrile plus methacrylamide) or (methacrylic acid plus maleic acid); and a copolymer of 90% chloroprene with 10% N-methylol methyl methacrylate. Many polyisocyanates are also listed, those used in specific examples being 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanato diphenyl methane, 1,6- diisocyanato hexane, the latter masked with potassium bisulphite, 3-isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5- trimethyl cyclohexyl isocyanate, and a liquid 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanato diphenylmethane containing carboimide groups. Examples 1-4 relate to the production of films of the resulting resins, and Examples 5 and 6 to the production of foams by beating a mixture of copolymer latex, polyisocyanate, chalk, sodium lauryl sulphate, a nonyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and (Example 6 only) triethylene diamine as cross-linking catalyst, the foams being hardened by heating in air at 150‹ C.
