Abstract
1,100,156. Flameless gas burners. C. S. FLYNN. 1 June, 1965, No. 23224/65. Heading F4T. A gas burner comprises a housing 112 supplied with a gas/air mixture under pressure and having an opening closed by an integral felt layer 118 of compressible fibrous refractory material providing minute orifices through which the mixture passes. The felt rests on a rigid coarse mesh screen 114, resting on a shoulder in the housing, and a fine mesh screen 120 is pressed down on to the felt by a further coarse mesh screen 122 which is wrapped around the outside of the housing and secured thereto by crimping or by screws or by an outer housing ring 124. The felt is larger than the opening in the housing so that it is compressed when inserted. The felt is preferably composed of fibres of alumina and/or silica formed from molten material by a steam blast and held together by a ceramic or resinous binder, for instance phenol formaldehyde. The felt is compressed by rolling to the desired density, porosity and thickness. A uniform blue flame is formed at the surface of the felt which does not glow or change colour. The felt may have a curved, undulating or hemispherical surface.
